On Monday, Apple announced Vision Pro, the Cupertino-based tech titan’s first mixed-reality headset combining augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
I instantly thought of director Steven Spielberg’s movie Ready Player One based on Ernest Cline‘s bestselling book!
Imagine being immersed in Silo on Apple TV+, playing No Man’s Sky or editing a la Spielberg’s Minority Report? This is the iPhone maker’s big play for the future of computing, television and more.
Influencers assemble.
Frankly, visionOS sounds cool and something Tony Stark would use as Iron Man. However, I was also minded of Steve Jobs’ so-called ‘reality distortion field’ as might be depicted in Black Mirror on Netflix. Seeing someone’s eyes peering out of a pair of goofy goggles designed in California evoked a proto-Stormtrooper from Star Wars.
“I can’t see a thing in this helmet!”
As much fun as watching the original Star Wars trilogy might be on Disney+ for Vision Pro, motion sickness precludes me from using headsets for the foreseeable future! Plus, it’ll set consumers back an eye-watering $3499 when it launches (US only) in early 2024.
Beware buyer’s remorse and a fear of missing out (FOMO)! However, when has a high price tag been a barrier to entry for affluent early adopters?
Google Glass failed, but I wouldn’t bet against Apple’s Vision Pro even amidst a cost of living crisis!
For now, I’m happy to watch a Speeder Bike chase from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi on a Sony BRAVIA XR Master Series OLED from the comfort of my living room sofa…
It'd be great for those working at home who lack the space for a proper workstation setup. The tech is impressive and it has a level of polish most products in its space don't have. I'd love to try it but I can't justify a product for that price that only works with Apple products.
I can't wait for crappy apple ads in VR. You know the ads, the ones for puzzle games.
On the flipside imagine watching Ready Player One and Ready Player One sequel, and playing Call of Duty in VR.
Also imagine the imax experience while lying in bed "staring" straight up at the ceiling.
