The Terminator
Summertime always evokes cherished childhood memories of watching movies with family and friends during the six-week school holiday! Some on the big screen, some on the small screen.
My first memory of The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg, was on rental video in the mid-eighties. A friend's dad let us watch director James Cameron’s tech noir opus on a sunny Sunday afternoon between video game sessions on Atari VCS, Sinclair ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64!
The movie's meshing of time travel, a killer cyborg and changing the course of history was terrifying, economical, storytelling with a guerilla filmmaking edge. A far cry from Cameron’s futuristic command centre producing the Avatar movies for the House of Mouse.
The notion of artificial intelligence (AI) turning on its human creators is especially prescient given the current moral panic surrounding all things AI!
