Threads
It’s the spooky season, and I’ve been thinking about Threads!
No, not the seminal BBC Cold War drama that traumatised a generation of school children (myself included) as we listened to Frankie Goes to Hollywood and played Daley Thompson’s Decathlon in 1984.
Meta’s response to Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (rebranded as X, which says it all).
I was one of the first to sign up for Threads when it launched in the summer of 2023.
At the time, there was an ‘Xodus’ to Mastodon, Bluesky and more. As much as I’ve wanted those social media sites to succeed, there’s been little engagement across the Fediverse, and I don’t have time to invest in posting into an abyss. Your mileage may vary.
Threads is by no means perfect (what is?)! However, there is a positive trend on the platform.
I started posting about classic sci-fi series and computers, and the responses evoked the ‘fuzzy feels’ of Twitter in 2006 before the rise of so-called influencers and an unhealthy following fixation.
Now, I look forward to reading replies and talking to like-minds, something I thought may never happen again post-pandemic.
This has inspired me to revisit films I’ve not seen in years.
Serendipitously, the updated and much-improved Prime Video (affiliate link) recommended Oblivion and The Truman Show. Who am I to ignore our algorithmic overlords? Both of these movies got a shoutout on Threads and the response has been phenomenal with people sharing their thoughts and insights. It’s a film class for geeks and I’m here for it.
As it’s Halloween month, I’ve been curating my own Fright Fest 2024 from Jeepers Creepers to the Terrifier on Tubi. The latter was terrifying for all the wrong reasons. As a Buffy fan since the beloved television series debuted in the late nineties, it was interesting to track down the unaired pilot episode that featured a recast Willow and lacked a soundtrack by Christophe Beck (WandaVision).
Until next time, it was Agatha All Along…
